As time goes on, your HVAC system will eventually wear out. For many homeowners, it is not clear when they should upgrade. It can be difficult to spend the money on a new HVAC installation unless it's absolutely necessary. The following are some signs you need a replacement HVAC system.

Your System is Over a Decade in Age

Even if you have been very meticulous about regularly maintaining your HVAC system, its time will eventually run out. HVAC systems have a lifespan, and once they begin to go out, you will notice it break down and need repairs.

Instead of continually spending money on replacing parts on an old system, which may not even work after you repair it, consider investing in a new system. If you think it is possible you need to replace your system, do so before any major weather changes if you can. You do not want to deal with no air or heat during the hottest or coldest parts of the year.

Your Power Bill Is Getting Higher

If you notice a significant increase in your power bill, the problem could lie with your HVAC system. This signifies your system is not working as efficiently as it needs to.

As time goes on, the parts of the system will wear out. This causes the system to work harder than it needs to, which ultimately uses more energy.

Your System Is the Wrong Size

One issue you could be having is that the system is the wrong size for your home. The size of your system has a major impact on its ability to properly operate.

Your system can be too large for your home. When it comes to HVAC, larger is not always better.

Or, you could have also installed a smaller unit thinking it would save you money. This will not work either. The result of both scenarios is premature wear and tear.

You Hear Noise

If you hear a noise, the problem can range from minor to significant. The sound could be just parts that have come loose, like the blower motor or the fan. The blades in the system could be loose, which requires immediate attention.

Either way, any noises you hear should be addressed right away. Loose parts can break and fly around inside the unit, causing  major damage.

If you hear hissing, this means air is escaping the duct. If you hear rattling, an obstacle could be trapped inside the unit. Look at your condenser outside to see if there is any debris. In some cases, noises indicate a major repair that may warrant a full replacement, depending on the diagnosis.
