An air conditioned home can quickly become hot and muggy when the A/C breaks down, making you and your family sweaty and miserable. Anytime you notice that something doesn't seem right with your air conditioning, it's best to schedule a service call with a licensed HVAC contractor right away. Even if the contractor can visit your home within a day or two, it won't take long for the heat to increase, especially if the conditions outside your home are extreme. During this time, you can take cool showers in an effort to lower your body temperature, and turn to these three simple strategies, too.
Rig Up A Cooling Breeze
Floor-mounted fans help to distribute the air around your home, but as the home's interior temperature continues to rise, you'll find that the fans are providing little relief. With a little creativity, however, you can cool the breeze coming off the fan's blades. Set up a fan on your counter or another sturdy surface and get a large, shallow baking dish. Cover the bottom of the dish in ice cubes and fill it to the rim with cold tap water. Place the dish close to the fan and turn it on. It won't be long until you feel that the air coming off the fan's blades has picked up the coldness of the ice and water and is distributing it across the room.
Chill Off Your Clothing And Bedding
When it's hot in your home, few things are more satisfying than slipping into something cold. You can achieve this goal by placing your bed sheets and even some articles of your clothing into your deep freeze, allowing them to get cold for a few hours and then using them accordingly. If you have trouble sleeping when it's hot, chill your bed sheets in the late afternoon and evening and then make up your bed. If you need to cool your body rapidly during the day, chill your clothing. While it's true that the materials will absorb your body's heat and get warm soon enough, they'll provide a burst of cool in the meantime.
Convert A Hot Water Bottle
A hot water bottle keeps you cozy in the winter, but you can also use it to stay cool when your A/C needs repair. Partially fill the bottle with water and freeze it until solid; don't overfill the bottle with water as the expansion to ice might split the bottle. Once it's solid, you have a portable freezer pack that you can take to bed with you, sit in your lap when you're lounging on the couch and even place your feet upon while you're sitting at the dinner table.
